WHAT IS ROUGE
Rouge is a form of corrosion found on the surface of stainless steel as a result of the disruption of the natural passive layer, mainly resulting from the surface’s exposure to heat, low ion, and low oxygen for extended periods of time. Rouging is as inversion of the passive layer rich in chromium-oxide to a porous layer rich in iron-oxide. This encourages the formation of iron oxide and other metal oxides, causing the surface to change colour. Rouge us typically Characterized by its reddish brown colouring.
TYPE OF ROUGE
Class 1: Makes the passive layer thin; rouge is wipe-able.
Class 2: Completely destroys passive layer; rouge is partially wipe-able.
Class 3: An extremely stable form of magnetite that is hard to remove.
WHY DE-ROUGE
Rouge within a system does not allow it to fulfil the key principle of cleanliness validation since it induces the threat of particle contamination. Rouge has the potential of spreading across the entire equipment from a single isolated point within a system, thereby affecting the life of the equipment.
PROCEDURE
It starts with the identification of the affected equipment followed by checking the level of Rouge present to estimate the quantity of chemical required for De-rouging in consultation with Pharmalab experts.
The next step is to list down the components for set up and arranging utilities like steam, vacuum, nitrogen, and the drain near the equipment, followed by checking the Ra value before and after De-rouging. Finally documentation and certification is completed.
